Chief Executive Officer of the Surfrider Foundation

Dr. Chad Nelsen is the CEO for the Surfrider Foundation and leads the world’s largest grassroots Chapter Network, dedicated to a healthy ocean, waves and beaches, through approaches which combine coastal recreation with conservation.  No stranger to ocean culture, Chad grew up in Laguna Beach CA, his father is a marine science educator for over forty years, and his brother a dedicated surfer with a Summer Camp for kids and guides trips to Fiji.  At Surfrider, under Chad’s current leadership, the organization is widely known for their dynamic and committed team, defending the coast against damaging projects, promoting ongoing coastal stewardship programs, advancing protective ocean and coastal policies at all levels of government, while cultivating and developing community activists and leaders.  Chad has many victories while at Surfrider.  He helped to establish the field of “Surfonomics,” which applies natural resource economic approaches to value surfing, along with securing the Reserve Marina Tres Palmas in Puerto Rico, and the Save Trestles campaign in San Clemente CA.
